The Feast Market is a new annual market designed to bring together Manchester’s many food heroes under one roof.
The event capitalises on a huge resurgence in interest in traditional British food and ingredients, showcasing some of the region’s best farmers and producers.
Many of the stallholders are family-owned businesses who have honed their trade over decades, and more stalls have been added due to the markets growing popularity.
Producers like Graham Kirkham, whose Lancashire cheeses earned him the title of 2009 Producer of the Year at the Manchester Food and Drink Awards, are a regular fixture.
Freshly made chicken and mango kormas, a huge array of traditional pies, and Savin Hill Farm's traditionally reared sausages and hamburgers all provide a mouth-watering lunch alternative.
Continental produce like French baguettes, plump stuffed vine leaves, Turkish baklava and marinated olives offer a deli-style treat.
Trevor Duerden’s fine fudges, created to a secret recipe in Burnley for three generations, provide a special sweet fix, alongside beautifully constructed almost-too-good-to-eat cup cakes and brownies from bakers The Dish Ran Away with the Spoon. Wash down your meal with locally brewed ale from the sheltered microbar nestling at the end of the market.
The event also boasts a special demonstration theatre – created in conjunction with the Manchester Food and Drink Festival (MFDF) – where some of the region’s finest chefs can teach you how to re-create some of their palate-pleasing secrets.
The 2009 event included talks by chefs like Michelle McKenna of Clippy Jam, Clarissa Dickson-Wright of Two Fat Ladies fame, Aiden Byrne of Lymm’s Church Green, and Paul Heathcote, darling of the Northwest culinary scene.
Whether you are looking for an ethical alternative to the local supermarket to do your food shopping, a delicious and healthy lunch-on-the-go, or some interesting ingredients for the weekend, the market provides a unique open-air shopping experience.
