Arts and Crafts Market

Home-made, hand-crafted, freshly-cooked goodies galore from Friday

St Ann, patron saint of Manchester's independent markets, will be hosting another gathering of traders at her square Summer 2010 tbc. This time, it's the turn of the region's craftspeople. Over 50 of them will bring their wares to the Arts and Crafts Market from Friday 7 August.

With the current craft renaissance, this market is likely to be as popular with those looking for inspiration for their own creations as it is with shoppers searching for something unique and beautiful. The crafts displayed will include wood carvings, woollen and felt goods, home-made soaps, natural skincare products, Celtic brooches and pendants, and glass jewellery from craftspeople such as Ian Chadwick and Niki Guy.

Niki makes bracelets, earrings and necklaces that have the qualities of jewel-like pieces of glass which have been smoothed and shaped by the sea. Ian Chadwick specialises in kiln formed glass art, creating bold, colourful pieces, often using optical illusions. Both create unique pieces with a story behind them. People who like to wear one-off items rather than mass produced jewellery will have plenty to choose from here.

There'll also be photography, paintings, clothes, bags, homewares and lots of delicious, freshly-cooked food.

Edible treats include curries, cakes, paella, chorizo rolls, pancakes, hot burgers and sausages, and hot roast pork sandwiches, the latter courtesy of Watson Caterers who'll be bringing a hog roast to the square. Wash it down with Hydes ales, British wines or something softer. It's a good option for lunch-break dining or an al-fresco weekend meet-up with arty, crafty friends.
